License Requirements
To qualify for an FCC GMDSS - Radio Operator's License (DO), you must:

Be a legal resident of (or otherwise eligible for employment in) the United States.

Be able to receive and transmit spoken messages in English.

Pass a written exam as described under the Testing tab.
Mariners who need an STCW GMDSS Training Certificate: If you are a mariner (deck officer) serving on a vessel equipped with the GMDSS system, you may be required to obtain a course certificate from a 70 hour USCG approved training course in GMDSS. The FCC examination and associated paperwork will be conducted during the course and a separate exam is not necessary. An FCC license without the course will NOT satisfy STCW requirements.
